At their peak, they effectively controlled court politics and appointments. They preserved wealth through large estate holdings, clan solidarity, and careful management of royal connections. Their motto of frugality and wise marriage strategy helped them remain influential long after their political zenith.

Rule: “Marry wisely, govern frugally.” (Traditional clan motto recorded in various gahun collections.)

Meaning: The Kims deliberately built alliances through royal marriages (many queens and consorts came from this clan). They also stressed thrift and careful estate management.

Result: Their intermarriage strategy let them dominate court politics for generations, especially in the 18th–19th centuries.

Yeoheung Min Clan (여흥 민씨)

Peak: 17th–late 19th century

The Yeoheung Min clan gained influence by producing respected officials and royal consorts, culminating in Empress Myeongseong (Queen Min) in the late 19th century. Their emphasis on education and moral integrity gave them a reputation as trustworthy scholar-officials. Wealth was preserved through strategic royal marriages and maintaining clan prestige even during turbulent times. Their decline came after the assassination of Queen Min in 1895, but their legacy continued through descendants and recorded gahun (mottos).

Rule: “Value learning, protect integrity.”

Meaning: This clan stressed producing scholars and officials who would not shame the family with corruption. They invested heavily in Confucian education.

Result: Several Min daughters became queens (most famously Queen Min, Empress Myeongseong), strengthening the clan’s political and economic standing.

Papyeong Yun Clan (파평 윤씨)

Peak: 15th–16th century

The Papyeong Yun clan rose high during early and middle Joseon, producing Queen Munjeong and numerous high ministers. Their peak influence was in the 16th century, when they shaped royal policy and court life. They preserved wealth through humility and virtue codes, stressing not to boast of ancestry but to live up to it. Careful estate management, strict family laws, and a reputation for moral conduct kept them respected even after their political peak passed.

Rule: “Do not boast of your ancestry, prove it through virtue.”

Meaning: As one of the oldest and most prestigious clans, they emphasized humility and service, warning that arrogance could destroy their standing.

Result: The clan retained prestige for centuries, providing multiple queens (like Queen Munjeong) and high ministers.

Study Questions

Here are the podcast questions. If you think this is for you, subscribe. My first ten podcasts will be completely free and not behind a paywall.

This is the beginning of a movement, as pompous as that sounds.

Self-help and personal development used to be a solo project. This podcast changes that. While much of your personal development will happen on your own, this is one of the first pieces of that world that belongs to both you and your family.

Your family will generate and form around a set of agreed upon values that will make it easier to work together.

And yes, there will be many talks about wealth, and how to build it. But there’s little sense in buiding wealth if you and your family cannot keep it, so we will analyze civilization, history, financial strategies, case studies of successful families, and books that are helpful to these ends.

They will learn how to be successful. Money is just one metric, and it is a means to building human capital, which you will learn is the most important measurement.

They will learn how to be happy. Beyond a certain point, money can’t buy that. Trying to do otherwise is an expensive mistake.

They will learn how to be emotionally intelligent. Emotional intelligence breeds trust— the foundation of all relationships —the cornerstone of applied psychology. It will help your family work together, minimize conflict, and expand your connections. When you go against the crowd, you will do so by choice, not out of ignorance, and in a way that minimizes the negative costs.

Finally your family will learn how to be resilient. They will keep what they earn, and the value of their blood, sweat, and tears will be harder to confiscate. Follow the principles in this podcast, and each member of your family will be harder to catch, harder to hold, and harder to break.

This substack is also a community. We will share notes and succeed together. Substack might not be where this ends, but it is where this great journey begins.
